Speed of Sound

The guys of Shark Speed are feeling the love in Provo
by Kendra Jewel Smith with special reporting by Collin Smith

Brothers Jared and Joseph Christensen began their most recent musical endeavor, Shark Speed, here in Provo and immediately started to search for additional members to round out their band. Thayne and Hans joined on, Thayne filling out the sound with vocals and and Hans on bass to create what they call a “70s rock feel with an Indie twist.” They began work on their debut full-length album last winter, and in August they returned to Arizona to begin recording; they will release their record this January.
Over the past year Shark Speed has put their efforts into honing their sound and giving expression to meaningful experiences from their lives. Joseph Christensen explains, “This record has undertones of a lot of memories and nostalgic things.” They all agree this has been one of the hardest yet most rewarding experiences yet. “[We] really poured blood and sweat into this project,” Christensen emphasizes. When you hear their sound, you’ll know they have put all of themselves into creating something they love and hope you will too.
Utah Valley was treated to Shark Speed’s performance at SEGO this past September, engaging the crowds with songs from their upcoming release. Christensen was extremely pleased with the outcome, saying, “It was one of the most fun shows I’ve ever played because of the excitement and enthusiasm.” Christensen credits Provo for their success so far: “Provo blows Las Vegas away! We appreciate it because we were a part of it. This great collective of people coming together for the arts and music has created a great platform on which to debut.”
Shark Speed has a lot to give and a lot to show. Check out the tracks “Cast Off Dance Off” and “Ten to Twenty Years.” Take a listen at myspace.com/sharkspeedrawks and watch for their CD release this
January.
